I have seen egrets in California on trips away from Los Angeles, but smaller and plainer than the ones in the picture.

There are several types of egrets. That one is, most probably, the Great Egret. There is at list one smaller, otherwise indistinguishable.

The difference could be in beak coloring, feet coloring etc., and it's beyond my puny level of knowledge.
